When will the storm pass for Melbourne s live music industry?

Tropical Fuck Storm - photo by Nick Tam Words by Greta Brereton  Melbourne’s live music industry is calling out for a lifeline. Melbourne’s live music industry has spent the past year weathering the storm of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and the fight to survive is far from over. Businesses are operating at significantly reduced capacities, large-scale events are struggling to get off the ground, and employers are relying heavily on wage subsidy packages to sustain themselves and their staff.  It’s an ongoing struggle that most of us hoped would be over when 2021 rolled around. For many, 2020 was written off as an unprecedented disaster that would somehow evanesce when the clock struck midnight on December 31. But two months into the New Year, it’s becoming apparent that this won’t be the case.

Music Victoria Appoints Simone Schinkel as CEO

The board of Music Victoria has named Simone Schinkel as its new chief executive. With effect from March 8, Schinkel will guide an organization that, since its formation in 2010, has stepped out as a leading champion for live and local music in the state and across the country. Schinkel joins MV having served at Theatre Network Australia, most recently as General Manager, and she brings to the role a resume stacked with experience in arts administration. Additionally, she holds a Master of Arts and Cultural Management, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in technical production, is an alumni of the Australia Council’s Emerging Leaders Development Program and co-convenor of the Arts Industry Council of Victoria.
