AG: New agency needed to tackle corruption issues

Article by Social Share The House is debating the Anti-Corruption and Anti-Terrorism Agency Bill 2020 which is part of a suite of proposed legislation to deal with corruption. Attorney General Dale Marshal said it was necessary to have a dedicated agency completely free from Government interference to conduct investigation into corruption issues. While the services of the Royal Barbados Police Force would continue to be used in this area of criminal investigation, Marshall said the extent of the investigative work to be done was beyond the capacity of the small police unit which currently handles these matters. The agency will be headed by a director general appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Opposition Leader. It will be a three-year appointment and the holder would be eligible for re-appointment for a second three-year term.
