conservation society s bronx zoo. this is the lemur exhibit. in the hour ahead, you ll meet lemurs and other animals and scientists studying them, proving that some animals are capable of many things we thought were uniquely human. we begin with two apes in iowa who have learned the ability to communicate using the english language. this is consy and his younger half sister. they re cousins to the chimpanzee and an endangered species. they are also considered superstars in the world of science. are you happy? because they understand spoken english. and they can communicate with humans by pointing and gesturing. can you show me the pine cone? the pine cone? that s right. they live in a research center called the great ape trust in des moines, iowa. they re sensitive animals and because they re considered so unique, the scientists who study them are careful not to upset them. when we said we wanted to come for a visit, we were told the apes had to invite us. hi. i m a
