Kristi Noem on Tuesday night announced she d made the move following an internal review of the Department of Corrections by the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources that was prompted by an anonymous complaint. As a result, Secretary of Corrections Mike Leidholt and State Penitentiary Warden Darin Young were placed on administrative leave. It was unclear if this is paid leave as of Tuesday night.

Kristi Noem issued a news release (below) late Tuesday evening noting a major shakeup in leadership at the South Dakota Department of Corrections and the State Penitentiary. The release, issued at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, said that earlier in the evening, Noem had placed Secretary of Corrections Mike Leidholt and State Penitentiary Warden Darin Young on administration leave. Former Adjutant General Tim Reisch will now serve as interim head of the DOC and Doug Clark, currently, the Deputy Secretary in the DOC will  be the acting warden. According to an anonymous complaint linked in the release, there were staff complaints of nepotism, sexual harassment, poor equipment, poor training, low pay, dwindling benefits, and improper spending on non-essential items and projects.

Tuesday evening, Governor Kristi Noem was briefed on a summary of an internal review conducted by the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources that was prepared as part of an investigation following an anonymous complaint. Gov. Noem has placed Secretary of Corrections Mike Leidholt and State Penitentiary Warden Darin Young on administrative leave in light of the anonymous report. “My top priority as governor is keeping South Dakotans safe, and that includes the men and women who work at the State Penitentiary and those who are confined there,” said Gov. Noem. It was announced that Tim Reisch will be appointed, effective immediately, to serve as interim Secretary of Corrections. Reisch served as Secretary of Corrections from 2003 to 2011, and he retired in 2019 after eight years as Adjutant General of the South Dakota National Guard.
