South Africa has caught the Afrobeats bug, and it is about time! Kat Upendi, Spokenpriestess and Boujeena are three South Africans DJs who make up Afrobeats Space. It’s a collaborative weekly Twitter space that brings together Afrobeats lovers and engages their listeners on current music, news and all things concerning the genre. The Daily Vox team spoke to the three women who are making strides in making sure that the Afrobeats agenda is loud and clear.
Afrobeats is taking the world by storm and it is about time we give the female artists a listen. most of the global focus has rightly been on Afrobeats and its sub- genres(Altè cruise, Afrofusion, and Afropop) breaking into new countries and soaring its listenership. However, there needs to be an acknowledgment of the success of the many women in Afrobeats bringing in the historically male dominated industry. Various townships in Gauteng have been experiencing power cuts unrelated to loadshedding. The power cuts have been taking place from 2021. It’s due to Eskom’s attempt to recover the amount of money lost to illegal connections, prepaid metre bypassing and cable theft.
