Tony Walker, an actor and London taxi driver, was selected for the project from an East End primary school in 1963 and went on to become one of its best-known characters.  The Up series, which was initially directed by Paul Almond before being taken over by Apted in 1970, followed 14 children from the age of seven - with one documentary released every seven years.
