time in the united states spanned three administrations, democratic and republican. you could argue he should not have been able to repeatedly re-enter illegally. you can argue he should have been treated more harshly by the criminal justice system while here. both fair arguments. but the ad flatly and exclusively blames democrats and links this clearly deranged killer who is on death row with the people in the current caravan who are fleeing poverty and violence in central america. who else will the democrats let in, the ad asks. jeff flake called it sickening. president trump calls it the truth. whether it is sickening or not or designed to appeal to fears, that s a judgment call. ads matter, and so do words. joining us now from the campaign responsible for this ad is katrina peterson. thanks for being with us.

listen, usually,, you know and it is a sad time for people like you and me, who are obsessed with ads, because, listen, we talk about ads, we think ads matter, but we think ads matter at the margin. you and john have just had a whole discussion about donald trump s recent comments. and that s about not things mattering at the margin. that s about things mattering in a massive, massive way. so, it suggests a little bit of restrategizing, if that s a word by trump nerms of what states he s looking at, but all of that is just going to get washed away, sorry to use that analogy now with the news that just broke here in this last hour, hour and a half, that you were discussing. so, ken, one of the things you re always focused on and one of the things you ve sort of taught me is we re all obsessed with polls, but forget about the content of ads. if we watch the pattern of spending and where ads are being placed and where they re being pulled, it tells you a lot in some cases more about t

which shows republicans and democrats tied on that issue. are they afraid the republicans might attempt a radical program? well, democrats first of all, what republicans may do is of secondary importance. because they know they have two months to fight this out. until democrats are of the opinion, look, that s where the numbers are now. this election is not over, though the conventional wisdom of this town is completely, lopsidelied on the side that the republicans will take the house. these races still have to be fought out. and democrats are going to fight that fight. they ve got plenty of money. elections are conversations, elections are choices, and democrats still want to put the argument before the american people. do you think ads matter? i think some ads matter. let s take a look at this one. there s an ad now that we re going to talk about. everyone says this is a good ad. remember that one ad from ronald reagan? let s listen to this one, because it has an oppo
