usa congressional reporter eliza collins. good to see you. good to be here. rick: the democrats have been quick to criticize president trump. where were they when former president obama did the same thing eight years ago? they were more supportive than they are now, of course. i think as we just saw joe crowley point out, this is a whole other th immigration is such a larger issue this time around because president trump ran on a tough on immigration stance. we now have the whole daca situation. congress has basically been frozen on the issue. so it is a different sort of situation and that s why i think you re seeing democrats jump so quickly to criticize the president. rick: we heard critics say the national guard won t have law enforcement authority but they will have extra eyes and ears and night vision and other equipment to assist the border patrol. so how is this a waste of resource as critics have called it? i think it really depends what you re looking at, where mo
immigration. this president is going to be tough. we have to be careful if we re going to cross illegally to the united states. but if you look historically, i get the president s point. he has every right to say that s still unacceptable. he can make that point. the question is, is it at a point where you activate the national guard, which is normally for emergency circumstances? clearly this is a political move, but it s a political move that caomes around the daca situation, and it got such a backlash among that core consistency among his base that he seems to be compensated for it. at the same time, when you see the calibration on using the words for mexico, it is an attempt to preserve a relationship on the trade front now that he s got larry kudlow coming in and so many aspects of a team to try to balance that democracy, and he needs to make
60 votes. what happens next? will continue trying. those bills were principally about the daca situation. and senator schumer offered 25 billion for border security, including a significant number of miles of fences and walls. that was a straight up daca. within the trump administration together with some of the republicans began adding riders to the proposal which was not acceptable. not only to democrats but also republicans. i think there are only 39 republicans that ultimately voted for it. so if we had a clean daca, and money for a wall or for border security, it would undoubtedly pass and it certainly would pass the house of representatives and would pass with my support. one thing to give in mind as we look at these, the presidential declaration, there seems to be
