joining me is lead organizer for our dream campaign and a daca recipient. you ve been tweeting todaast night as the government shutdown began. you thank the democrats but you also thanked jeff flake and lindsey graham standing with you, meaning dreamers in this vote. you feel that the pressure that you put on members of congress has born some fruit. absolutely. right now we have seen it s a moment that none of us want to see. i want to make sure that people know and understand that dreamers did not want a shutdown. people pushing for the dream and wanted a shutdown. we wanted to make sure that democrats really use leverage that they do have to make things work to push trump and the fwop
president said. he invited the media in to sit in on a meeting with lawmakers to hear him say, if lawmakers came to an agreement on daca, he d sign it. a group of bipartisan senators led by dirk durbin on the right, lindsey graham on the left on your screen, did that, and the president dismissed it, calling it, quote, a big step backward, in this tweet on january 12th. now daca sits at the center of the government shutdown, meaning any talks about getting the government up and running again are likely going to have to include what to do about immigration. joining me now is erica andiola, lead organizer for our dream campaign and a daca recipient. you ve been tweeting last night, as the government shutdown began. you thanked the democrats but also jeff flake and lindsey graham for standing with you, meaning d.r.e.a.m.ers, i suppose, in this vote. you feel that the pressure that you put on members of congress has born some fruit.
recipient, about dreamers. are you frustrated that there aren t more talk about stories like yours, that the media is not embracing a story like this? absolutely. that s why i m so thankful for fox that they re talking about this. they are keeping this alive. these are the people, the first line people who are here to help us are the officers. and our politicians our lawmakers are doing nothing but protecting the folks that they re supposed to be keeping out of our country. and when you have stories like, this where officers are killed, all of a sudden, they are ignoring it completely. it s just horrible. it s really heart breaking. rachel: talking about in this morning he tweeted, let me tell you what he tweeted here. democrats are far more concerned with illegal immigrants than they are with the great military or safety at our dangerous southern border. they could have easily made a deal but decided to play shut down politics instead
trump committed to him he wouldn t back an immigration bill unless he and senator tom cotton backed it. if that s true, good luck on making any kind of deal at all. joining me now, jim manly, former chief spokesman for senate mujoerd leader harry rooet, and erica, daca recipient, leading to fight to get the d.r.e.a.m. act passed. jim, let me start with you. what do you make of cotton s role or the idea that cotton and meadows would have a veto on any of this? you know, it s just another symbol of the degradation of the political prosin this country. it s one thing for mark meadows to run around blowing things up in the house because, you know, that s the house. but for this kind of thought process to start moving over into the senate is very, very dangerous. but having said that, you know, senator cotton can think of these ideas all he wants, but the fact of the matter is they re widely unpopular and under the current rules of the senate, you know, nothing he
and shouldn t that come before these other considerations which matter but aren t as urgent? we think not. we do think border security is a very urgent situation. say that to the family of kate steinle. say that to other families say that to the family of jorge garcigarcia, who just wat him get thrown out. chris, let s be clear. a daca fix would not help jorge garcia. he s not a daca recipient. he missed it by one year. but you could make changes in the law where you consider these kinds of things. we could. that is not even addressed by the graham/durbin proposal. let s be clear as a matter of fact checking here hold on, raj. i m good with that. but kate steinle, you know look, it is such a god-awful situation that that family had to live through. publicized as it was, lose i katie steinle. all understood.
