people behind trump wanted to see he has the same attitude or they care about results? are they happy if he just screams and shows he doesn t like illegal immigrants from across the border from mexico, if he screams against the chinese and acts tough and tries to get us out of the middle east, it s just the exercise of trying to do those things, do they win votes and keep votes with him and his base? i think that s partly right, yeah. there is this desire to reconnect with them when the wheels seemingly come off. we saw that just this past week with his daca position being exposed, if you will, to the base by ann coulter and others who were blowing a gasket of where the president seemingly was ending up on this daca thing. what did he do? he doubled down, the rhetoric heated up and it was his way of reassuring his base through his
i accept your point. and got exactly what we wanted and sometimes not going to the table is what you do in a negotiation. he got the government funded and the c.h.i.p. extension and got the delay in the taxes and didn t have to give anything in exchange for that. moving forward we do look forward to continuing the what is his position? the position is as it has been from the very begin. we are interested in border security. that s not a daca position. what s his position on dreamers? if you let me finish. i want you to answer this question. you don t get a chance to pick and choose. we want a large agreement. we want a big deal that solves the reason that we have a daca problem in the first place. if you simply gave amnesty, whatever you want to call it to the folks who are here, but don t solve border security, then you are simply delaying another daca problem 10 or 15 years from now. you have to deal with it holistecly and the entire am gracian issue.
but again, i can t speak for the president, but i think he wants a solution, i think republicans want a solution. ultimately they re not willing to put something in stone because this isn t a funding issue. daca isn t a funding issue. i think having discussion about things like some of the domestic funding that democrats ultimately want is probably more what mitch mcconnell is looking to do. caroline, this is the problem, though, isn t it. because we saw in that tuesday meeting the bipartisan meeting, that donald trump had said, i m going to sign whatever you in front of me, hammer this out and i ll bought my name to it. he went back to the white house and his advisers got to him and he changed his mind. this is at the root of the problem. how do you and the democrats deal with that? and also to you, austin, that s a problem for the republicans. because the american voters see this and the world is seeing this. the flip-flopping. he absolutely flip-flopped on his daca position.
go along with what the president has to say and what about some in the opposing party? absolutely. we have been working on this now for months. and four of us members of congress and the house introduced a bill yesterday that essentially covers the president s priorities. look, i think republicans are generally open to some sort of legislative move related to the daca position, but there s a couple of priorities that have to be most important. one is we have to secure our border. i represent a border district. we have cartel trafficking through our communities. it s a public safety and national security issue. and we need to make sure we are not inserenit incentivizinge illegal activity coming across the border. we have seen how barriers work in a district like mine. also in our bill we got ending chain migration ending visa lottery. cracking down on sanctuary cities and kate s law. we have a mandatory everify and guest worker program. these are very reasonable things that are really
mr. president, how is your daca position treating a heart? i have a great heart for the folks we are talking about. a great love for them and people think in terms of children but they are really young adults. i have a love for these people and hopefully now congress will be able to help them and do it properly. abby: i don t know if you heard the question at the top of that clip but the reporter says, mr. president, how is daca decision treating dreamers with heart? because this idea oftentimes we have heard in the mainstream media that you did not be in favor of the law. but also have emotion and compassion for the dreamers that are here. steve: i m glad you brought that up because, you know, the president has been sympathetic towards the dreamers. he said yesterday he loved the dreamers. and then, according to axios this morning, the president has told his associates he does not want the dreamers punished. so, it will be interesting what happens. he has kicked the can down
