The world watched a white police officer kneel on the neck of George Floyd for 9 minutes and 29 seconds on May 25, 2020. We all watched a murder.
“Murder” is a word indicating a crime, it has a specific meaning, it is term of art, something attorneys are fond of and use with precision and care. All criminal defense attorneys tout the importance of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and so many were loathe to use the term “murder” before the trial of Mr. Floyd’s killer ended. I am a lifelong defense attorney but I have never shied from using the word “murder” when talking about Mr. Floyd’s death. The technicalities of the law cannot cover what the videotape shows: this was a murder.
