GRAND RAPIDS, MI Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Grand Rapids reached an unenviable milestone with the most homicides for a year in its history.
The Dec. 6 shooting death of a 23-year-old man was the city’s 35th homicide, one more than the 34 homicides in 1993. Last year, there were 18 homicides.
All but eight victims of this year’s killings were from gunfire.
Local authorities say they believe the COVID-19 pandemic is playing a role, partly because of a lack of programs and structured activities that are temporarily unavailable.
