The Big Takeover: Interview: Aaron Lee Tasjan

Whether it’s as a solo artist, forming bands ( Semi Precious Weapons, New York Dolls, Everest), Aaron Lee Tasjan’s never been one who can be easily pigeonholed. While his earliest solo work was in the singer/songwriter vein with Americana-flavor, since signing with New West Records in 2016, Tasjan’s released some infectious pop records with ’70s glam rock overtones and a style to match. You’ll hear as much Jeff Lynne as Tom Petty, as much John Lennon as Cheap Trick in Tasjan’s perfectly-crafted songs. Like so many other artists, Tasjan released his lastest album, Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!, in the midst of a global pandemic and is anxiously awaiting the day where he can get back to doing what he loves, playing live shows in front of people whether he’s standing by himself on a stage with a guitar plugged into an amp or rocking out with a full band.

Tasjan’s sound is laid-back without being lazy, and rich but never maximalist, with smooth vocals ofte

Aaron Lee Tasjan s Gambles Pay Off on Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!

“At the time … either producing or co-producing this record felt important,” Tasjan tells the Scene. “I didn’t know why, at first; it was a gut feeling. So I presented it [to New West] like, ‘What would you think if I produced it?’ The label was like, ‘We certainly have faith in you, but you don’t have any kind of track record as a producer. We’re not really sure that we feel comfortable with that entirely.’ ” Tasjan explains that if he’d heard such feedback earlier in his career, he would have likely heeded his label’s advice and moved on. But now, as a seasoned artist confident in his vision and abilities, he decided to make

His upcoming fourth record, the self-titled Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! may well be his most distinctive work to date, honing his mix of glam, psychedelia, and vintage rock and roll to a potent edge.
