Waga Advances RNG Projects in North America

In Chicoutimi, Quebec, Waga is making RNG from methane on a closed landfill, selling the clean renewable product to utility Énergir, and sharing revenue with the shuttered facility’s owner, Matrec-GFL. Quebec is requiring utilities to inject 10 percent RNG into the pipeline by 2030, and Waga sees landfills as playing a role in meeting that target while lowering facilities’ carbon footprint.

Scrub Hub: Landfills try to convert methane emissions into energy

The average American throws out roughly four pounds of trash every day: Food they don’t eat, packaging for items they buy, things they no longer use. With more than 330 million people in the United States, that’s enough waste to fill more than 60,000 garbage trucks on a daily basis.  Some of it is recycled, and some of it is donated. Most of it, however, piles up in landfills that are scattered across the country.  There are at least 2,000 active landfills across the United States with thousands more that are no longer in use.  In Indiana, there are more than 30 tons of trash per person in our landfills. That’s more than most states, according to recent data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Landfill expansion get local go-ahead

Discussion regarding an expansion of Greensburg’s landfill recently continued. File photo GREENSBURG The Decatur County Board of Zoning Appeals met recently to discuss the much debated issue of a landfill expansion at the site of the Decatur Hills/Best Way landfill at 2280 S. U.S. Hwy. 421, Greensburg, in Washington Township. Following a lengthy discussion, the Board voted 3 to 2 in favor of allowing the special exception needed to move forward with the planned expansion. Curt Publow, Environmental Compliance Manager for Best Way, spoke to the Board. “I want to reiterate that we’re here to ask for a special exception which will allow us to continue our existing business of a landfill on a new 48.4 acres across the road from our original location,” Publow said. “This won’t represent a change in our practice or operation, but is simply an expansion in our business in an adjacent property.”
