Confident Mikel Azcona holds healthy points margin leaving Slovakiaring

Volcano Motorsport’s Mikel Azcona leaves the opening round of the TCR Europe series season at the Slovakiaring with a healthy points advantage over last year’s champion Mehdi Bennani after a near-perfect weekend.
The Spaniard, driving the latest version of the Cupra León Competición, started the weekend on the right foot by topping the opening free practice session before effectively sitting the rain-affected second session.
Come qualifying, Azcona contented himself to the outside of the front-row as Tom Coronel claimed pole position but, ever the wily touring car driver, Azcona wasn’t concerned.

Mikel Azcona fastest in FP1 as TCR Europe season kicks off

Volcano Motorsport’s Mikel Azcona kicked off the 2021 TCR Europe series season with the fastest time in the opening practice session at the Slovakiaring.
The 2018 champion, driving in the latest generation of the Cupra León Competición, set a best time of 2:27.774 to end up just over three-tenths of a second quicker than the PSS Racing Honda Civic Type-R TCR of Franco Girolami.
Girolami had been the early pacesetter as the track conditions evolved but Azcona was the man to beat come the end of the session, the Spaniard continuing his impressive end-of-season form from 2020 in the new campaign.
Tobias Brink tops wet morning test at Knutstorp

Brink Motorsport drivers Tobias Brink and Lukas Sundahl topped the morning STCC TCR Scandinavia test session that was held at a wet Ring Knutstorp circuit.
The Audi duo set their lap times early in the session before the rain increased in strength, with no improvements seen for the remainder of the session.
Brink headed his team-mate by just below a second, with Kågered Racing driver Andreas Ahlberg third, 1.9 seconds from P1.
Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky put her PWR Racing prepared Cupra León Competición in fourth position, with Oliver Söderström fastest of the Lestrup Racing Team drivers in fifth.
