AN appeal for cash is being made to save a village clock.
The Gainford village clock, the tower of St Mary’s Church, is in need of urgent repairs so it can continue keeping time and chiming.
Geoff Taylor, from the church, said: “Last autumn, the village had a widespread power cut. It affected the church clock and the back-up battery failed to kick in.
“The clock stopped – the auto wind mechanism for the chimes could not be re-activated.”
The engineer reported that the motor had developed faults in its circuit board and internal workings. Now the clock no longer chimes and is not keeping correct time.
