The American Hotel & Lodging Foundation presented four furloughed Orlando hotel employees with full-ride scholarships to Valencia College.  One of the recipients Jordon Cooper was laid off from the Hyatt in March. He’s had to take other jobs to make ends meet while applying for unemployment assistance. Cooper says starting classes this week in a restaurant management degree program has given him new hope.

The 12-week job training program in Fort Pierce prepares graduates for careers in the food production industry. It’s designed to help them develop their skills and move into new roles. As many struggle with employment during the pandemic, the program is meant to serve as an option for improving a person’s future potential. President and CEO Judith Cruz says students will learn the principles of cooking, cleanliness, food service operation, and designing a menu. The course has been offered for 4 years, but it’s even more vital right now.
