TWO events in 1992 made history for Tawau. The first was when I hosted the visit in April by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, then Finance Minister; he was the first Federal Finance Minister to call at any Customs Station in Sabah.
Soon after that, shortly before I left Tawau, I hosted an official visit by the then Director-General of the Bea dan Cukai Department of the Republic of Indonesia, Bapak Soehardjo and his deputy Bapak Ali Purwito. They were in Tawau for a fact-finding mission and also to observe cross-border trade operations between Tawau and Kalimantan.
