The Congress of South African Trade Unions joins South Africans in the progressive movement and internationally as we mourn the passing of Comrade Chris “Che” Matlhako, SACP Central Committee member, and General Secretary of the Friends of Cuba Society – South Africa. Comrade “Che” passed away on the morning of the 20th of April 2023. Comrade Matlhako, became involved in mass demonstration movements in the early 80s as he was growing up. He was an all-around activist who started his activism at a very young age as a student. His family was working class, his mother was a nurse, and he has three brothers. He joined the African National Congress in 1989 when it was still banned.
