Proclamation in Recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month Tharros Place, a nonprofit that provides residential services for survivors of human trafficking, recently announced a number of events upcoming in January for National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a presidentially designated observance designed to educate the public about human trafficking and the role they can play in preventing and responding to human trafficking. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ theme for Human Trafficking Prevention Month 2024 is Activate Connections to Prevent Human Trafficking.

Freedom Rides! Book Launch Stono Heritage Week in Savannah (1/4). Join us for a gathering of spirited liberation discourse in Indigenous participatory knowledge-building, and countervailing narrative—based upon 2 exciting new books by Dr. David Pleasant, Freedom Rides! Volumes 1&2. This 6yr long motorcycle quest, through multiple states, reveals the startling non-fiction legacy of regionally inspired Indigenous African and Native resistance to colonization, chattel enslavement and subjugation. It is an unrepentant liberation narrative of maroon, Seminole and self-emancipating people. The Sept. 9, 1739, STONO rebellion opened a multi-state gateway to long range, self-determination action: a combined force of sovereign African and Native people.
Spring Human Trafficking Stakeholder Meeting Tharros Place, a new nonprofit that will provide services for survivors of human trafficking, will host its Spring Human Trafficking Stakeholder Meeting. This event is free and open to the public and includes a presentation by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Carra Henderson, networking, and the option to purchase lunch. Those interested in learning more about human trafficking and collaborating to bring it to an end are encouraged to attend.
Wangari and Fredi: Legacies of Counter Colonial Power, Now and Forever! An evening of alive dialogue, film and participatory music featuring two powerhouse Women of Liberation and Justice: Fredi Washington and Wangari Maathai. From Savannah to Kenya, both worked to empower people of the diaspora in reclamations of ancestral knowledge and contemporary agency. Dr. Maathai, Nobel laureate, reforesting millions of acres of industrially deforested African spaces: Fredi Washington writing and speaking passionately against casual American segregation and lynching.
