(KYMA, KECY) - Not all of the the thousands of people heading to the border to seek asylum are from Mexico or Central America. Many come from even farther away. Karel Stephers brother is one of them. A former captain in the Cuban army, Luis Rafael Stephers Pina, fled his homeland after getting thrown out of the military. Now Karel tells News 11 s Crystal Jimenez, his brother fears for his life.

(KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents say they re encountering larger and larger groups of undocumented migrants along the U.S./Mexico border. In fact, they say they ve seen groups as large as 95 in recent weeks. Border Patrol tells us it s been making as many as 400 apprehensions a day for the last week. Many of the migrants are arriving in packs of at least 50. Agents say they re seeing many Cuban and Brazilian nationals now trying to make the crossing. They also say the number of unaccompanied children and pregnant women continues to climb.

(KYMA, KECY) - A San Luis resident and community activist is pushing for the removal of three Gadsden Elementary School District board members, saying the area deserves a respectable school district. Gary Snyder is circulating recall petitions targeting Guillermina Fuentes, Gloria Torres, and Rosa Varela. A grand jury in December indicted Fuentes on ballot harvesting charges. Snyder says that s just one part of his motivation. I think as a school board member you have to recuse yourself so the school board itself doesn t lose their respect and credibility. he said.

CBP: 118 percent increase in border apprehensions YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report a significant increase in apprehensions recently. Many of which are said to include children and pregnant women. CBP s Yuma Sector controls 126 miles of the U.S./Mexico Border. CBP said they have been apprehending between 200-450 people trying to cross a day in the last week. That s a 118% increase compared to the 2020 Fiscal Year many of them seeking asylum from other countries. Vincent Dulesky, with CBP, said in the 2020 Fiscal Year, they apprehended about 3,600 people. The number has increased to 9,500 this fiscal year. Many of them, unaccompanied children and pregnant women, according to CBP. Coming with just a change of clothes and documents that identify themselves on their backs.
