Egg Collective show celebrates female talent and mothers

An art and design exhibition organised and curated by all-female trio Egg Collective and photographer Tealia Ellis Ritter celebrates female designers and motherhood. It comes as mothers around the world have been bearing the brunt of the hardship the pandemic has dealt, be it balancing being a working parent while supporting children with virtual school, or having to leave the workforce altogether in order to do so.

According to the National Women’s Law Center, more than 2.3 million women have left the American labor force since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, 2020. For Hillary Petrie, partner with Stephanie Beamer and Crystal Ellis in New York’s Egg Collective, this data is more than just an “incredible loss in creative capital.” It points to the “motherhood penalty,” or the sociological term for the price women pay in their professional careers when they also serve as parents and caregivers. “Careers are too often side-burnered or abandoned,” says Beamer.

A man convicted, along with his former girlfriend, of a 2003 quadruple homicide in Gaston County was dealt a blow this week in his efforts to have his four murder convictions overturned and win a new trial.
Keith Lavoris Hall, now 41 and serving multiple life sentences, was hoping to get additional DNA testing done from a fingerprint found on a Pepsi can police found during their investigation into the Sept. 2, 2003, shooting deaths of four people in the Paradise Point neighborhood south of Belmont.
Hall, who has been representing himself on his appeals, asked for the DNA testing in June 2019. A month later, Gaston County Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell denied Hall s request.
