OPINION: It will be 60 years next year that the current roll-on roll-off ferry link between the North and South Islands began. Planning is in place to introduce larger and more efficient ferries as well as changes to infrastructure at the two ports. Millions of passengers and tonnes of freight, as well as cars and rail traffic, have bonded New Zealand as one country. My wife and I, plus elderly dogs, travel twice a year from Wellington to our bach in Akaroa, Canterbury. We are seasoned travellers, know what is expected on the ferries, and have our rest spots sorted in Picton and Cheviot (the most marvellous public toilet and rest area on State Highway 1).
