let me come to you first here. is this a win for american capitalism? big time. i m at michigan state university. of course. the big three are saying oh my goodness. the average age of those cars on the road is about 50 years. and the average american car is 11 years. yeah. the trade. they can be at the international trade shows. all the auto shows. it s not just marriott and the others. it s also mining companies. it s coca-cola. it s across the spectrum. cruise ship companies. i think there are openings. by some of them will be displaced economic activity. there are other firms already there. they are french. they are european. they are canadian. they are latin american. the question is whether you can get growth going. at this point, what has to happen on the cuban side for the
officer, traveling this part of the world frequently, it s critical that the steering functions properly. and the company should have addressed that immediately. obviously, there s lessons that can be learned the world over. here in the united states says, we certainly have our share of ferries operating out of various ports around the states. what can be learned for us here? well, what can be learned is that these types of incidents can occur anywhere in the world at any time. and the advantage we have here is that we have very highly trained american officers aboard many of these vessels. the cruise ships that ply our coasts don t necessarily do that. we have american cruise ship companies that use the benefit of cheaper foreign labor so that if an incident like this does occur, we re not assured that there s an american officer aboard managing the incident and making sure people reach safety. so that could be a concern. but overall, it s a possibility anywhe

carnival need to do a better job at its business? i have a funny feeling the cruise industry will face problems getting new passengers. one of the things that needs to be done is something needs, if anything, something needs to happen to enlighten passengers or to force the cruise ship companies to enlighten passengers about their rights. most people don t know the ticket contract relieves the cruise line of all liability for anything. people are finding out now. i think while the government can t do anything to change that they should at least force them to tell people to be more open about the very, very limited if any liability they have for these types of incidents. heather: millions of people can t afford a vacation or take a cruise right now. is this something the government should be getting involved in? no, absolutely not. it s ridiculous to think we need a passenger bill of rights.
is there so much, or total lack of, almost, regulation of the cruise ships? they ve gotten way so far from having regulation but there is a variety of cruise ship companies and i hope the whole cruise ship industry is not judged by this one incident. this is like walmart of cruise ships as i understand. they have lower rates and so on. so they get away with a lot more than the more sophisticated money. the question in my mind is why did this engine fail? they ve had one fail before, two years ago off mexico. they have have the splendor this, is not unusual. they go adrift all the time. but is there any deterrent owe or punishment to these people?
