there were seven i believe cruise missile strikes. denied some really advanced weapon that the united states is worried that the russians would be using. it looks like normal kind of cruise missiles. we did see at least one death. it is curious that the russians are still targeting a western city. we heard from a general, a russian general describing a more clear picture of what vladimir putin s agenda is here in ukraine and said it looked as though russia would want to extend along the southern part of the country at the black seacoast creating a land barrier of the donbas in the east and not far from where i am as far west as moldova and the russian separatist area.
this video and it shows a cruise missile launch from a diesel submarine somewhere in the black sea. mason clark is joining me, he is russian team lead at the institute for the study of war. is this a new tactic by russia? thank you for having me. we don t know for sure whether or not the russian navy has used submarines to date in its invasion since february 24. we know that they have been using this type of cruise missile for quite some time. there is a good chance that they were already using submarines, but this is just the first time that they have acknowledged it, likely to score propaganda victory and talk up the various weapons that they are using. but they used submarines throughout the russian intervention in syria, particularly 2016 and 2017 to conduct very similar caliber cruise missile strikes. why do you think that they are just starting to do this now in the war? we re so many months into this. what do you think this indicates
being with us. can you tell us what the shelling has been like in and around kharkiv here over the weekend? translator: the situation has been very difficult indeed. there was nonstop shelling over the weekend. by the end of the day, we also had cruise missile strikes. we have a lot of damage to the infrastructure and also we have casualties. we have people with injuries. the situation is quite difficult. we also have new types of weapons being used against us. we have seen ammunition that has a time delay. so it strikes. and then it waits a while before it explodes. also, we have quite lethal ammunition being used where we have specific civilian targets aimed at. i can also say that the russian
russian cruise missile strikes. strikes from the air. long-range artillery fire. in many cases probably given the area that this next offensive is going to be in coming from inside russia, targeting locations inside southeastern ukraine. as the russian military is refitting, is resetting, is getting ready for this next phase, the ukrainian military needs to do the same thing. they need to reset themselves and be ready for this next phase. so we will likely see in the coming days even more weapons, military aid flowing into the ukrainian military, hallie. courtney kube live for us there at the pentagon. courtney, thank you. great reporting. appreciate it. coming up, we ve got some new reporting in from the january 6 committee. what sources are telling our team about a possible interview with them and former president trump. don t miss that. plus, our nbc news scoop, going inside mr. trump s finances. a look at the kind of obscure online-only bank that s lending him money now that all
from being able to physically reach one another. so that includes, taking out some of their equipment, their ammunition depots, their vehicles, their command and control. one of the messages that we got from the ukrainian government, a couple of hours ago, was that they were coal going after ukrainian military control centers. that is what the u.s. military might call their command and control centers. so they are really trying to stop the ukrainian military from mounting any kind of coordinated defense, in advance of the russian military physically moving across those borders. another thing that we have been expecting to see, and we re hearing from ukrainian government is happening, is cruise missile strikes, so the russian military already had dozens of missile assets, all around that country. but the one that was particularly concerning to u.s. intelligence officials in recent days, where those ships that the russian military
