German punk princess Nina Hagen isn’t the most obvious inspiration for a Disney movie, but “Cruella “ is also not your typical Disney movie. The new live-action origin story about the black-and-white-haired cartoon supervillain is less about a maniacal dalmatian-skinner than an aspiring designer with a punk sensibility out to disrupt the stuffy ways of the past in 1970s London.

From the company that brought you the “Happiest Place On Earth,” comes a movie that asks: “could we get people to sympathize with a psychopath dog killer?”
No one really asked how Cruella DeVille became the evil woman she is, but Disney is willing to answer it for you anyways. (Arguably) Unnecessary prequels and origin stories tend to take someone awful like say Darth Vader, a mass murdering Sith Lord and makes them someone you kind of root for until they literally murder children. Welp, now I guess we HAVE to hate them, right?
Estella is a misunderstood artistic kid with black and white hair who is also totally punk rock, dude. Her life is turned upside down when, and no I’m not kidding watch it for yourself, 3 Dalmatians are sicked on her mother killing her. Like… this is so creatively bankrupt it’s almost funny.
