Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, long-serving Saudi ‘Mr Oil’ who brought the West to heel – obituary Telegraph Obituaries © Hulton Archive/Getty Images Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani circa 1975 - Hulton Archive/Getty Images Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, the former Saudi Oil Minister, who has died in London aged 90, was the architect of the Arab oil policy in the 1970s that sent oil prices sky-high, threw the world economy into chaos and changed the balance of international power. For two decades Yamani was “Mr Oil”, the soft-voiced negotiator who dominated the councils of the international price fixers and who could inject confusion into the stock markets with a throwaway remark to a reporter. He knew exactly how to manipulate prices and how to seize an advantage by cutting production. Whether his strategy benefited Arabian oil producers in the longer term was another matter.

Kate Middleton jewellery: Duchess transformed Princess Diana s £50,000 earrings

Trending “We believe Kate has transformed Lady Diana’s original studs to better suit her personal style and add her own twist.  “The short drop earrings suit her contemporary style and makes them a perfect day earring for any official engagement.  “At Lebrusan Studio we have clients come in all the time wanting to refresh jewellery and often recommend small transformations such as this, so you keep the original feel of the piece, but give it a new life.  “To do something like this probably won’t cost more than £1,000 and there is nothing better than repurposing a family heirloom to empower you everyday.”

Kate Middleton refashioned £55,000 earrings with unique history from Princess Diana

Princess Diana kept this set of jewellery for special occasions and wore it first in 1981 to the National Film Institute Dinner at the Royal Festival Hall. The expert added: “Diana herself refashioned this jewellery and wore some of the sapphires from the suite as a headband to a dinner hosted by Emperor Hirohito in Japan in 1986.  “In fact, it has become one of her many infamous fashion statement moments.” The earrings are now one of Kate’s favourite pairs in her collection, and she also wears them on special occasions.
