The United States’ largest springtime rowing regatta will return to the shores of Mission Bay from March 31-April 2 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The San Diego Crew Classic originated in 1973 as a means to bring the titans of East Coast and West Coast collegiate rowing together for early season competition.
The 49th San Diego Crew Classic is back at Crown Point Shores this Spring! We are excited to host all of this year's competitors, our loyal alumni and, of course, the fantastic spectators that make this one of the best (and most fun) spring regattas in the world!The Crew Classic is not only an athletic event with competitors at the peak of physical fitness, but a social gathering for enthusiasts to soak up city views, sunshine and sunsets, have access to food trucks and a diverse offering of local craft beers, cider and wine.This year we are introducing the Friday Welcome Party in the Champions Pavilion! From the Archives: Mission Bay holiday boat parade launched 50 years ago [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
Fifty years ago the first annual boat Parade of Lights, was held on Mission Bay on Dec. 14, 1970. The peaceful flotilla of boats decorated with lights and ornaments featured Santa as well as a procession of church and youth choirs singing carols.
A distinctly San Diego celebration, the boat parade on Mission Bay preceded the more formal San Diego Harbor boat parade by a couple of years. Due to a rise in Covid-19 case, the parade has been cancelled for 2020.
