the man who is today crimea as prime minister congratulated the crowds don t go away we re going home a phrase repeated over and over on this day this time backed up by the russian national anthem. the previous month had seen violent protests in ukraine s capital kiev the demonstrators wanted to reduce russian influence the protests drove the country s pro russian president from power moscow responded by sending its forces into ukraine s crimean peninsula which has an historical link with russia soon the referendum was called but the result was clear from the start efficient tally showed over ninety percent voted in favor of leaving ukraine. yet the idea of russian role was especially bitter for the indigenous crimean tatars who are traditionally muslim in the one nine hundred forty seven leader joseph stalin deported over two hundred thousand chartist essential asia tens of thousands died. but in one nine hundred fifty four stalin
to break up the protesters from gathering any kind of momentum before they made their way out of here. in terms of what the scene is like now, i m going to step out of the way. it remains a calm scene with the moments of tension inbetween them. israeli police standing guard outside of the walls of the old city damascus gate. a group of protesters denouncing president trump s decision about jerusalem, and every once in a while you ll see the israeli police come in and try to break this sit in up. so there hasn t been any kind of large scale or wide scale violence that we ve expected. but there have been minor clashes between the peaceful protesters sitting behind me and the israeli police that are adamant to make sure the crowds don t get any kind of momentum and certainly not spread beyond this little area around the old city. in terms of the political fallout, we are still talking about that. you ve talked about it in the show. we re hearing from some of the senior members of the plo,
chinese. trump has done a good job in opening up that channel. go down that channel. trump has done a good job in opening up saudi arabia as a potential source of change. do that wisely. don t blow up the middle east. use the tools that you ve got in hand. we ve got to go to tease, excuse me for saying this. i read china daily, english version of it, occasionally. i am struck by how their approach to the world is the complete opposite of our approach or russia s approach. every single article is china is throwing their arms wide open. the canadian prime minister is here. we re excited about the possibility of a new deal. they talk about america. they even talk about positive things about donald trump. you go through it. it is all about they are friends with everybody. they do good news part. they want to do deals with everybody. we are open to the world, and
from what you know about his story, what do you think the title of that story is? um, don t want to spoil the premier, has been sort of the first domino in the russiagate. the first domino? something like he is the first one who decided to break the silence in this situation. that was the italian fiancee of the first former trump campaign advisor to plead guilty, george papadopoulos, speaking to abc this morning alleging that papadopoulos had contact with steve bannon and michael flynn. the campaign has described papadopoulos as a mere volunteer, but simona disputes that he was that low level. was he in touch with the
the second thing is there s a new player in all this, which is dan scavino. he knew that the russians were trying to reach out to trump to create this social media page on vk, which has very few users in the united states. it s really used around the world just for russians, ex-pats, russian language speakers, so it s really, you know, it also speaks to the extent to which the russians really saw a friend in donald trump to the point where they wanted him to actually begin to advertise to social media users over there. david, what jumps out to you about that story? what jumps out to me is that the key leads in this story, the june 9 meeting that donald trump jr. had with the russian lawyer was followed up, that it wasn t a one shot, that there was a continuing tail to it. but he had said on hannity, don junior said on hanhannity, t was it. there was no follow-up. specifically contradicted something that he said.
