KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A Missouri judge on Tuesday sentenced a 20-year-old man to 18 years in prison for the death of a woman struck by a stray bullet at a Kansas City arts event.
Kansas City, Missouri resident Deon te Copkney was sentenced to 18 years for second-degree murder and three years for armed criminal action for his role in Erin Langhofer’s 2019 death, The Kansas City Star reported.
Copkney pleaded guilty to both charges in May.
Overland Park, Kansas resident Langhofer, 25, was shot in the head while she stood near a food truck at a First Friday event in the city’s Crossroads Art District.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the death of a Kansas woman who was hit by a bullet during an arts event in Kansas City in 2019.
Deon’te Copkney, of Kansas City, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Aug. 3, 2019, death of Erin Langhofer, 25, of Overland Park, Kansas.
Langhofer was shot in the head while she stood near a food truck at a First Friday event in the city’s Crossroads Art District.
Copkney told detectives he emptied the clip of his gun as he ran from a group that he and his friends had fought with, The Kansas City Star reported. He said he fired into the air and didn’t intend to hurt anyone.

The Cordish Cos. is scheduled to begin construction of the $140 million, 288-unit Three Light Luxury Apartments development in downtown Kansas City, Mo., in May and the Midland Lofts, a 139-unit, affordably priced adaptive reuse project, this summer.
Three Light is expected to deliver in May 2023 and the Midland Lofts renovations are slated for completion in late 2022.
The two projects will create more than 1,000 construction jobs and a sense of optimism for future of the city’s downtown Power & Light District following the pandemic, according to Nick Benjamin, executive director of the Power & Light District and managing director of multifamily development for The Cordish Cos.
