A priest who grew up in Marshfield and previously served Catholic parishes in Wisconsin has resigned as the administrative head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops after impending media reports alleging possible improper behavior, the organization said Tuesday.
The accusations against Monsignor Jeffrey D. Burrill shared with the Conference of Catholic Bishops do not include misconduct with minors, President Jose Gomez said in a memo to members, which the National Catholic Reporter posted Tuesday on Twitter. Gomez also serves as archbishop of Los Angeles.
U.S. bishops elected Burrill as their general secretary Nov. 16, 2020. Before that, he served as associate general secretary for more than four years. Burrill served at St. Bronislava Church in Plover from 2013 to 2016 and moved to Washington, D.C., after his election as general secretary.
