Rotorua building consents: $15 million approved for Rotorua builds

More than $15 million worth of building consents were issued in the last month of 2020. Data from the Rotorua Lakes Council shows there were 86 building consent applications with a total work value of $15,577,800.
Confidence in the construction industry has meant this year was set to be a good year for builders, local experts say.
The biggest building consent was $3.3m for the extension and alterations to ward 2 of the Southern Cross Rotorua Hospital on Otonga Rd.

A new motel, rebuilding a burned-down church, strengthening and alterations to the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre and a multimillion-dollar private hospital refurbishment. Those were some of the top projects that were issued building contents in 2020 and were part of 1228 applications worth more than $142 million.
The biggest consent issued last year was $18.9m for seismic strengthening and internal alterations to the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.
Rotorua Lakes Council arts and culture representative councillor Mercia Yates said the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre redevelopment will be of huge benefit to the community.
Two new operating theatres, recovery units plus a larger car parking area are part of an initial $11 million expansion underway at New Plymouth’s Southern Cross private hospital.
