何かの病原体に感染するなどの原因がないのに炎症に伴う症状が出るため、「自己炎症性疾患」と呼ばれています。２０１７年に、治療指針が作られました。
発熱時は、ステロイド薬を投与します。効果が高く、飲んで半日以内に熱が下がります。ただ、発熱の間隔が短くなるという報告があり、症状が軽ければ使わないこともあります。
また、胃薬の「シメチジン」を服用すると、一部の患者では発熱を防げることもわかってきました。この薬をＰＦＡＰＡ症候群の治療に使う場合は、公的医療保険の対象となりません。
薬物療法の効果が乏しい場合は、扁桃を切除する手術も選択肢となります。ただし、多くの患者は１０歳を過ぎる頃になると、自然と症状が軽くなってくるため、慎重に検討します。
