The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Punjab government to speed up and complete its collection of environment compensation cess levied on farmers indulging in stubble burning
The Supreme Court has reiterated the need to stop crop residue burning in Punjab and other states near Delhi to reduce pollution levels in the national capital region. The court noted a lack of implementation despite several reports and committees existing on the pollution issue. The court is interested in the outcomes of the ongoing efforts to contain farm fires.
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana are burning stubble at night to evade detection by satellite and local officials working overtime to contain farm fires that have poisoned the air in Delhi NCR, it is learnt.
