Christian Tumi, the first and only cardinal of Cameroon, has died

A priest for nearly 55 years and a cardinal since 1988, he died on Holy Saturday. Tumi served as Archbishop of Douala from 1991-2009, but it was not until several years after he had retired that he became a leading figure in efforts to resolve the Anglophone Crisis that has disrupted the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. I have the deep sorrow of announcing the return to Eternity of His Eminence Christian Cardinal Tumi, said Archbishop Samuel Kledahe of Douala, in announcing his predecessor s death. Through the mercy of God may his soul rest in peace, the archbishop said on Facebook.

It is a leaked biological weapon, the 77-year-old Dominican cardinal said. He also maintained that his claims could be supported by the military. All military experts around the world are convinced of this, but they are either afraid to or do not dare say it, Cardinal Duka said.

It s time for Churches in Africa to stop looking for handouts from the West

Maryse Quashie  (Photo by Charles Ayétan) Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Propaganda Fide), recently sent a letter to bishops in mission territories urging them to consider renouncing the subsidies they receive each year from the Vatican. Normally, dioceses in almost all of Africa, Asia and Oceania and some parts of Latin America receive funding from the Vatican-sponsored Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) to help finance their pastoral services and pay salaries. But donations to the PMS have dropped considerably since the coronavirus pandemic hit more than a year ago and the Vatican is finding it difficult to funnel the usual financial resources to places traditionally considered to be part of the missions.

A moral theologian with a doctorate from the prestigious Alphonsian Academy in Rome ( Alphonsianum ), he headed his Capuchin Order s vice-province in DRC and was president of the National Assembly of Major Superiors before being named bishop in 2004.
