Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced on Monday that she is running for attorney general, challenging the recently appointed incumbent Rob Bonta.
Schubert made her official announcement while standing in front of families of violent crime victims, whose perpetrators she helped lock up during her 30 years as a career prosecutor. She didn’t take long to send shots at her opponent and other progressive prosecutors across California.

SACRAMENTO - The prosecutor best known for pushing to unmask the mysterious Golden State Killer said Monday that she is running for state attorney general as advocate for victims and to right a criminal justice system she said is in chaos, days after California’s current top law enforcement officer was sworn in.

Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert blasted newly-sworn-in state Attorney General Rob Bonta and San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin as she announced her candidacy for the position of California s chief law enforcement officer in a speech April 26.
Schubert, an independent who left the Republican Party a few years after she was elected as Sacramento County s chief law enforcement officer in 2014, is the lesbian sister of Proposition 8 campaign consultant Frank Schubert.
She rose to national prominence due to her role in the prosecution of Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., who is also known as the Golden State Killer. DeAngelo pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder last summer.

Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert will challenge new Attorney General Rob Bonta in next year s campaign, joining a field that also includes a former assistant U.S. attorney general.
Schubert gave up her Republican Party affiliation in 2018 and will run as an independent to challenge Bonta, a reform-minded Democrat who took office in mid-term Friday.
