Print The San Diego Convention Center is finishing its role as a temporary facility for unaccompanied migrant children this week, roughly two weeks ahead of schedule. The final 11 girls staying at the downtown landmark were expected to leave before midnight on Wednesday and reunite with family or other U.S.-based sponsors, according to Cristina Kapustij, spokeswoman for the federal government’s operations at the facility. Just under 2,400 children had been released to sponsors from the site since it opened at the end of March. No more unaccompanied children will be brought to the facility, Kapustij said, as the convention center was scheduled to stop housing children by July 15.
