State lawmakers voiced strong support for reforming Minnesota s civil forfeiture laws on Thursday, as members of the House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee voted, 14-1, in favor of a bill that would greatly restrict when police can take the property of those suspected, but not convicted, of certain crimes.
The bill s author Rep. Kelly Moller, DFL-Shoreview, called it a compromise, noting that civil forfeiture reform has been the subject of debate at the Capitol for years. Now is the time for us to enact these important reforms, Moller said.
Moller s bill would restrict when police agencies can forfeit the vehicles of those suspected of crimes such as drunk driving. It would also stop officers from seizing cash less than $1,500 during most drug arrests.

As President Joe Biden moved to kill a key permit for the Keystone XL pipeline on his first day in office Wednesday, Indigenous Water Protectors in Minnesota want to see Biden’s campaign promise extended to another notorious tar sands pipeline project: Enbridge’s Line 3 replacement and expansion, which, like Keystone XL, also crosses an international border and would lock in dangerous, planet-warming pollution.

More than 3,800 inmates in Minnesota prisons have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Eleven inmates have died from the disease.
As recently as December, there were increases in cases at Oak Park Heights, Faribault, St. Cloud and Togo prisons. MCF-Togo saw its first cases last month.
“The bottom line is in a static environment where people don’t move, or you don’t have to move people in and out, it would be very simple to manage your population,” said Commissioner Paul Schnell. “We have to move our people through the system.”
The Department of Corrections Commissioner spoke to Minnesota House lawmakers on Tuesday. He explained intake for men happens at St. Cloud and when the facility fills up, they have to move inmates to other locations.
