Announcing a mix of immediate and longer-term funding to extend the cross-Executive Tackling Paramilitarism, Criminality and Organised Crime Programme, Justice Minister Naomi Long said paramilitaries hold communities back, exploit them, deny them opportunities they deserve and hurt them, in many cases maiming people and carrying out horrific human rights abuses with lasting impacts on individuals, their families and our society.
Minister Long said, “This renewed funding will focus on helping those facing paramilitary harm in the here and now as well ensuring that young people are not drawn into a new generational cycle of paramilitarism, violence and crime.
“People have had to live with paramilitary control, violence, threats and exploitation for far too long.
Funding Allocated To Ensure Delivery Of Fresh Start Initiative Funding of nearly £1million has been allocated by the Department of Communities to ensure the delivery of the Fresh Start initiative.
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey welcomed the funding.
The allocation of the one-year financial settlement was agreed by the cross-Executive Tackling Paramilitarism Criminality and Organised Crime Programme Board.
Minister Hargey said: I welcome the confirmation of a funding settlement which allows the important work of the cross-Executive Tackling Paramilitarism Criminality and Organised Crime Programme to continue. This funding will include almost £1million for Department for Communities based projects. My Department will deliver a range of projects at a grass roots level to enable young people, their families, carers, and women to develop skills, knowledge and confidence for personal and community development.

The UK Government is “prioritising support” for efforts to thwart terrorism in Northern Ireland.
It hailed the transformation of the security situation in the region over the last 20 years as a credit to the people of the region and security agencies.
However, it noted the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in 2019, a “killing that shocked the world”, as a reminder of a “small number of dissident republicans who remain intent on killing”.
