The president of Iowa State s Crew Club said Little Wall Lake appeared smooth and the winds were forecast to be low before the club s deadly capsize on March 28 in Hamilton County.
Yaakov Ben-David, 20, a sophomore, and Derek Nanni, 19, a freshman, died when their boat capsized during practice around 9:30 a.m. late last month. Three other crew club members were rescued and survived. In a statement to the Ames Tribune and other media outlets, Crew Club President Alexis Aurandt said she was the coxswain that day. The coxswain sits in the stern, facing front and is in charge of navigating.
