Melbourne marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete

Earlier this month, Melbourne commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, with a number of events.
The Battle of Crete was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War. Over 12 days in May 194, a mixed force of New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops desperately tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault. Despite suffering appalling casualties, the parachutists and glider-borne troops who led the invasion managed to secure a foothold on the island and eventually gained the upper hand. The battle ended with the evacuation to Egypt of the bulk of the Allied force.
This year, Melbourne celebrates the 80th Battle of Crete anniversary early due to the pandemic.
Australia’s Cretans don’t get to visit Greece in 2021, hence, this weekend the Pancretan Association of Australia and New Zealand, the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne and Battle of Crete Commemorative Council organised a series of events.
The honorary guests for this year’s commemorative events were Archbishop of Australia Makarios and General Consul of Greece in Melbourne Emmanuel Kakavelakis.
The celebrations began on Saturday at the Cretan Village’s ballroom at 90 Cathies Lane in Wantirna South with Sifis Tsourdalakis, Paddy Montgommery, Anthony Iliou, George Sevastakis and the ‘Dyo Patrides’ outfit.
