Thicket. This is not a big grove. Not a bunch of yards from end to end. It is still pretty important for moving through a cultivated landscape. It is one of the few wild places that remain here in the valley floor. Time, bears here all the particularly in the fall when they are out looking for wild and mastic fruit. Actually, we have a willow tree back here, where a black bear was bedding for about a month and a half. A pretty gnarly willow, it has been used extensively by bears for a bedding. One bear was here for about a month last year. I will show you whats behind. If you come through here, you can see on the trunk of this tree, the way the bear has worn the bark from climbing up. Call marks, the spark here. You can see this pile of bear in the crook of this branch, just above here, they left a pile this big, which is pretty impressive. These stories every year and this is one thats recent. So you know i just ran into drew whittenburg whos here and he always brings me these bright Young Students from tipp city. And its such a pleasure to meet them. Theyre so inspiring to be here. And it reminded me of a story when i when devil grove first came out about ten years ago, i got a letter or email from a young law student at northwestern, and she wrote me this beautiful. She said, gilbert, after reading your book, ive decided what i want to do. I want to be a public defender in the spirit of, you know, Thurgood Marshall. And i said, thats beautiful and stayed in touch with her a little bit. And she said she moved down to florida. She got a as a public defender in west palm beach. Her name was claire. And, you know, she would keep me updated. Her progress and the cases that she was on and a of years later, she started to really rise up in the office and she said, you know what, i want to give you an award. Its called the gid

Weve now left the industrial era for the age of air, biotech and all pervasive computing. As a result, technology liberating us from natural limits, embodied differences. Hello, im john reed faculty here in the Creative Writing Program and the director of the creative Creative Writing Program at the new school. The one time i was on this stage, i was a board member of the nbcc chairing a category. Its my great honor tonight to welcome the nbcc and to welcome to this Years National book. Critics circles awards. The new school and the nbcc have a long standing relationship going back to the very earliest years of the nbcc. Our faculty have been Board Members and awards recipients and our communities have worked together in classrooms and and events since before the memory of anyone here, the annual awards have been hosted at the new school for over 20 years. This few years have been very challenging for all of us with covid, we are finally back on campus for an in real life nbcc simone and of course at the new school we are emerging from last fall when all of us were tested and our ideals and faith in one another and the future working with the nbcc is so
