Celebrating students, community and educational equity at TRIO Day

UAA joined hundreds of colleges and universities across the country to celebrate TRIO Day on Friday, Feb. 23. The annual event recognizes students, staff, educators and community supporters across all TRIO programs, a federal initiative that launched 60 years ago to support educational opportunities for first-generation, low-income students.

A champion for change

UAA student Tayler Higgins is one of five young adults named to the 2024 Champions of Change cohort with the Center for Native American Youth. Tayler is passionate about centering and elevating Arctic Indigenous youth voices and the interaction of climate, social and economic justice work. She hopes to use her role as a champion to bring more opportunities back to her community.

On Jan. 30, 2024, Gov. Dunleavy delivered his annual State of the State Address, during which he recognized three Alaskans with direct ties to UAA with standing ovations: alums Kristen Benge and Sheila Sweetsir, and former staff member Patty Gilbert.
