Carson was a scientist who spent over six years documenting her analysis that humans were misusing chemical pesticides before knowing the extent of their harm to the whole biota. She called upon humans to act responsibly, carefully, and as stewards of the earth.
She challenged humans to live as an equal part of the earth’s systems and not as the master of them. It sounds like the mantra of Creation Theology today that, as humans, we were given a particular role as caretakers, protectors, and encouragers of the conditions of life.
Rather than being privileged and honored above all other creations, our value lies in our faithfulness as caring companions to the earth and its life.
