April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, but the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem got a jump on celebrating their volunteers at their annual appreciation luncheon on March 21 at Ardmore Baptist Church.
Winston-Salem resident Horace Barrett volunteered for military service as a paratrooper, parachuted into France on D-Day, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Along the way, he was awarded four Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars before returning home. Today Barrett celebrates his 100th birthday.
A man who allegedly returned gunfire in a shooting that killed a 12-year-old in Hartford last week has been charged, and a juvenile who was injured has been remanded to custody after investigators discovered he was on probation and house arrest.
