Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has filed suit against Vyera Pharmaceuticals, alleging that the drugmaker engaged in illegal pricing practices for its drug Daraprim.
In the suit, filed Thursday, the insurer says Vyera intentionally monopolized the market so it could increase prices on Daraprim a drug used to treat infections in immunocompromised patients such as those with HIV by more than 4,000%.
The suit names Vyera, which was formerly Turing Pharmaceuticals, alongside its parent company Phoenixus AG.
It also names former executives Kevin Mulleady and Martin Shkreli, who was dubbed the pharma bro by some in the media after rising in notoriety for acquiring Daraprim and increasing the price in 2015.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has filed a class-action lawsuit alleging anti-competitive practices that let a drug company impose a huge price hike for a critical medicine used to treat a life-threatening parasitic infection.
Defendants include Martin Shkreli, the former drug company leader who came to be known as Pharma bro after news broke about how his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, boosted the price of a drug called Daraprim.
At age 32, Shkreli engendered the wrath of a congressional committee during and after a 2016 hearing, where he appeared to smirk repeatedly while refusing to answer questions about his company s alleged business practices.
Despite evidence of racism s impact, Minnesotans disagree on how it affects health grandrapidsmn.com - get the latest breaking news, showbiz & celebrity photos, sport news & rumours, viral videos and top stories from grandrapidsmn.com Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday newspapers.
