Parents and students of schools in Sheridan County School District 2 have expressed opinions on both sides of the decision to end the mask mandate in the county’s schools.
Craig Dougherty, who’s superintendent of the district, elaborated during a presentation on Public Pulse earlier this week.
Dougherty said the decision to ask for an end to the mandate was made in collaboration of all three of Sheridan County’s School Districts, and it wasn’t made overnight.

Administrators of Sheridan County School District 2, the schools in Sheridan and Story Elementary, are still working on the budget for the year that starts on July 1, but Superintendent Craig Dougherty expects the total to be close to what was budgeted for this year.
In dollar terms, that’s projected to be in the $49 to 50 million range, he said. He said the education budget that passed the Legislature this year maintains a status quo position.
Dougherty said the district will continue to work with the Legislature.
Dougherty said Wyoming’s Legislature this year basically punted the funding challenges that the state faces during the current financial crisis. Overall, he said, that isn’t a good thing. But because of that, he said, the negative impact that school districts face in the coming year is flat, with no reductions in revenue.

Sheridan, WYO The Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) has approved a request from all Sheridan County school districts to make masks optional in K-12 schools. The change took effect today.
Approval from the WDH exempts local schools from the mask requirement included in the Twenty-Fourth Continuation of Statewide Public Health Order #1.
Signed by State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist, the exception also grants school districts the authority to continue requiring masks under certain circumstances. This may include bus trips for activities and other situations where masks could help curb transmission, as determined by school and district administration in consultation with health officials.
