CQ dairy farmers join call for milk national standard

Premium Content Subscriber only Dairy farmers from across Central Queensland have joined calls for uniform standards in testing and sampling of fresh milk to ensure product quality and payment efficiency. Currently there is no national standard for fresh milk testing and sampling across Australia, with farmers group Dairy Connect and Central Burnett chair Aaron Clews calling for implementation of a standardised code in the Mandatory Dairy Code of Conduct. Dairy Connect chief executive officer Shaughn Morgan said Dairy Connect in 2019 made a submission to then Federal Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie in relation to the then draft Dairy Mandatory Code of Conduct.

High-tech satellite rain gauges to improve CQ rainfall data

Premium Content Subscriber only New high-tech satellite rain gauges are being trialled by Queensland graziers in a bid to boost rainfall data across the state. Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said rainfall data was essential for information tools used by graziers. Rainfall, or the lack of it, is one of the fundamental measurements used in environmental management tools such as FORAGE and pasture growth reports, Mr Furner said. FORAGE generates property-level reports incorporating a range of seasonal conditions and other environmental data, and AussieGRASS uses spatial simulation to model pasture growth and seasonal conditions in rangelands. With Queensland being so large, rainfall data is often segmented over varying locations and time periods leading to information gaps.

CQ s $37M beef project on track to be operating mid-year

Signature Onfarm Beef will be a 200-head-a-day abattoir, established by Central Queensland pastoralists Josie and Blair Angus. The $37 million operation is well and truly underway, with the facility expected to be fully operational in July. Mr Angus said the facility would support the region s beef producers and generate economic spin-offs throughout the region. This project is about delivering returns to farm gate, jobs to the bush and delivering bespoke products to consumers, he said. Producers in our region have invested a lot in the quality of their herds and a boutique facility like this aims to maximise the potential and value of each and every one of those individual carcasses.
