As the Stop & Shop on Silver Lane nears its permanent close, and the plaza it calls home gets closer to being sold, East Hartford’s new mayor is looking at ways to revitalize the important stretch of town.
The Stop & Shop supermarket in the Charter Oak Mall on Silver Lane is set to close Jan. 6, leaving the site with a large vacancy. In October, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts-based grocery store chain said the supermarket’s landlord would not grant a renewal of its lease.
Stop & Shop is due to shutter an East Hartford location soon, and Mayor Mike Walsh said he is concerned about the gap that will be left in the resurgent Silver Lane corridor.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts-based grocery store chain said the supermarket’s landlord will not grant a renewal of its lease. The location is expected to shut down on Jan. 6, 2022.
All workers at the East Hartford location will be given the opportunity to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations, she said.

Brokers for the Charter Oak Mall in East Hartford have signed a nearly 21,000-square-foot lease with value-priced fashion apparel retailer Citi Trends.
Citi Trends, which says it caters particularly to Black consumers, has four other Connecticut stores, including in Hartford and Windsor.
The 940 Silver Lane store ‒ which will be located next to Burlington Coat Factory ‒ opens on March 25, according to Citi Trends’ website.
Steven Becker of The Becker Group Inc. represented the owner, CP Plaza Holdings LLC, while CBRE represented Citi Trends.
Headquartered in Georgia, Citi Trends is publicly traded and as of earlier this month had a total of 585 stores in 33 states.
