Mamata Banerjee s younger brother Ashim succumbs to COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday claimed the life of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee s younger brother, Ashim Banerjee, at a hospital in Kolkata.
The Chief Minister s brother had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment, Dr Alok Roy, Chairman, Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata informed.
As per the Union Health Ministry, there are currently 1,31,792 active COVID-19 cases in West Bengal. A total of 9,50,017 recoveries and 12,993 deaths have been reported so far.
 On Friday, West Bengal registered its highest single-day spike of 20,846 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 10,94,802, the health department said in its bulletin.Â

Kolkata: As West Bengal is gearing up for the fifth phase of the ongoing assembly polls on Saturday, the entire nation is witnessing a spike in the COVID-19 cases.
West Bengal reported 6,910 new COVID-19 cases and 26 deaths just ahead of the polling in the fifth phase.
According to the state health bulletin, the total count of cases has reached 6,43,795. The number of active cases in the state stands at 41,047.

Kolkata: Amidst the elections rallies in the second wave of coronavirus, a Congress candidate lost his life to corona while three other candidates were tested positive.
In the past two weeks of April, Bengal has seen a huge surge in the number of infected people majorly because of the public gatherings due to election rallies. Rezaul Haque, Congress candidate contesting from Shamsherganj in Murshidabad was tested positive on Wednesday. He subsequently fell ill while campaigning and showed some symptoms of the novel coronavirus.
